....makes for a good listening. Whitney is trying to update her sound and she tries hard. Invitng collaborators from all types of R&B and pop music, she tries hard to be hip. And it works. The first 3 tracks are the strongest points on the album. They're top R&b tracks. "When You Believe" is the typical diva ballad which doesn't miss but doesn't quite hit either. Then, it picks up with "I Told You That" and other tracks. Yet, the second half of the album is a mere disappointment. The ballads aren't touching, they merely frustrate and irritate the listener who would rather replay the eariler tracks. The only ballad which really hits is "I Learned From the Best", a powerful anthem of "now-I-know" songs. What saves the album from a banal ending is a hidden track contributed by Lauryn Hill. Smooth and sensuous, its a wonderful end to the album. That said, buy the album if you're comfortable with both R&B and ballads. If you're not, you're better off buying the singles.
