A Legend Is Born, Or Something Cheesy Like That....

You know a band is good when they inspire intense debate, analysis, and piss off half of their "fans" in the process. Wilco is one of those bands. They've released record after record of incredible songwriting and experimentation. And each record doesn't sound like the last, a feat many bands only wish they could pull off. A Ghost Is Born is a great record, not as great as Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but still a fine piece of work and one of the year's best. And like any Wilco album, it takes many a listen for it to sink in. It seems that too many have forgotten the experience of listening to a record these days. You need to sit down and absorb it. Listen to it many times, and let it grow into you. Wilco may turn off long-time fans with this, but the adventurous ones will stick around and be rewarded. There's the gorgeous ballad "Hell Is Chrome," the post-Neu! jam of "Spiders (Kidsmoke)," the garage rock of "I'm A Wheel," and the wonderous AM pop of "Thelogians." A Ghost Is Born has its own logic; there's no obvious theme, but it all pulls together as one despite the fact that one may not be able to pinpoint where it stands in Wilco's evolution. If anyone says this sounds like Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, they're lying.



Plus, I really like Tweedy's guitar solo in "At Least That's What You Said."
