Wilco

Mermaid Avenue

a really wonderful album

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
I liked Woody Guthrie and Billy Bragg before I bought the album, and I was glad to hear that Wilco is also very talented. While there are a couple of tracks on the album I can't stand, mainly the "hoodoo voodoo" one, I just set my CD player to memory mode and skip over it. The rest of the album is great. "Walt Whitman's Niece" is very funny, and "Hesitating Beauty" is a great love song, kind of reminiscent of Bragg's "Greetings to the New Brunette." I love "California Stars," "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key," and "She Came Along to Me," among others, but "Ingrid Bergman" has to be my favorite. It is just so plain and poignant, it makes me cry every time. Also, the Natalie Merchant solo song sounds a little like her work on "The Wishing Chair" (a la "Just as the Tide was Flowing"), which I love. A great album!
