Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

Nivana Meets the Monkees

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
This album has as much original musicality as any Steely Dan album, with clear influences of The Monkees, The Beatles, Nirvana, and The Floyd. It is amazing, and is easily the Album of the Year! Oh, and could you all please stop saying that this is an "alt-country" album. Just because Tweedy uses violins ala Mellencamp on "Jesus" doesn't make this anything close to alt-country. This album is genreless in the same way that Daft Punk isn't alt-techno/house just because they sample Barry Manilow. This album is a must buy for anyone who enjoys music for more than just the melodies. The timbre of each song is original and startling. Tweedy understands that a song is not complete unless it portrays a heretofore unheard musical mise en scene. The distortion effects with which the album is riddled enhance the quality of music and never get in the way. Many songs would have been pop only if it weren't for the genius of the effects....
